名前のこと

ＮＨＫが去年から放映していた日本人のお名前と言う番組があります。名前のルーツ由来を探るもので多くの方がご覧になっていると思います。ちなみにスズキの名前の由来は、和歌山の方言で、稲わらを保存するわら塚（スズキ）だとか。
聖書を読みますと神との出会いの中でアブラムはアブラハムと呼ばれるようになり、ヤコブはイスラエルと名前を変えています。またイエスとの出会いの中で、シモンはペトロ、サウロはパウロと名前を変えています。これらにあやかってでしょうか、カトリックでは洗礼を受けると、洗礼名をもらいます。新しい名前をいただくことによって、その洗礼名の聖人の、信仰に習うものとなるように・・・という意味があります。キリスト教の国では、ヨーロッパだけではなくロシアにおいても、洗礼名の聖人の祝日を盛大に祝います。また、修道院でも誕生日はお祝いせず、洗礼名の祝日をお祝いします。春日部教会の守護の聖人は聖テモテです。その祝日はいつかご存知ですか？シモンがペトロと呼ばれるようになったように、皆さんの洗礼名についても意味があると思います。そして、その祝日はいつでしょう。
今日の聖書のみ言葉は、ペトロの信仰告白について語ります。ペトロはガリラヤ出身で、シモンともケファともシメオンとも呼ばれています。シメオンが本来のへブル的な形で、エルサレムの教会ではこの名で呼ばれています。シモンは、シメオンがギリシャ化した名前で、多くの場所では親しみを込めて、このシモンという呼び名が使われています。ヨハネの福音書では、その召し出しのときすでに、「あなたはヨハネの子シモンであるが、これからはケファと呼ぶことにする」・・・とおっしゃっています。ケファは当時の話し言葉アラム語で、岩という意味です。ギリシャ語ではペトロとなります。当時の人は自国語とギリシャ語と両方を話しましたから、このあとは、新旧の名前をいっしょにし、ヨハネではシモン・ペトロとつづけて呼ばれることが多くなります。
面白いのは今日のマタイ福音書では、ヨハネの子ではなく、バルヨナ・・すなわち「ヨナの子」と呼ばれていることです。ヨハネは「主は恵み深い」という意味ですが、ヨナは「鳩」といういみです。ペトロは嵐の中に現れたイエス様を見て水の上を歩いて行こうとしますが、強い風が吹くと慌ててしまい、沈みかけてイエス様に助けを求めます。また、モーセとエリヤがイエス様に現れたのを見た時には、ここに三つの幕屋を建てましょう・・などと、訳も分からず口走ったりします。また、最後の晩餐の夜には、捕まるのを恐れ、イエス様を知らないと三回否むことになります。そこでイエス様は、ペトロがいつも鳩のようにおくびょうで、いつもばたばたしているのを見て、ヨナの子とおっしゃったのかもしれません。そして、これからは岩のように動じない信仰の持ち主になりなさい、そうおっしゃりたくて岩という名前をくださったのではないでしょうか。
さて今日のみ言葉のうちとても大切な質問に目を向けてみましょう。「それでは、あなたがたはわたしを何者だと言うのか」
この質問のあとには、互いに顔を見合わせ、一瞬沈黙が続いたことでしょう。
そのときペトロが口を切り、偉大な告白をしました。そして十字架に向かうイエスは今、少なくとも弟子のひとりが、ご自分を、メシア、神の油注がれたもの、生ける神の子として認めていることを知ることができました。
ここで注意すべきことは、イエスの質問はあなたに向けられ、あなたはわたしをどう思うかと問われているということです。ピラトがイエスに、【あなたはユダヤ人の王か】と尋ねたとき「あなたがそういうのは、自分の考えからか、それともほかの人々が、わたしのことをあなたにそう言ったのか」と答えられました。
人は、今日までイエスに対して述べられた教えをことごとく知り、イエスに対する偉大な思想家神学者の意見をことごとく理解したとしても、それでキリスト信者とはいえません。キリスト教の信仰は、イエスについて知ることではなく、イエスを知ることです。
イエスの「あなたはわたしを何者だというのか」と問いかけは、私たちの、一人一人に向けられているのです。あなたはどうこたえるのでしょうか。

There is a program A name of a Japanese that NHK has been broadcasting since last year. I think that many people watched this program which follow the origin of their name. The name Suzuki, for instance, is derived from the Wakayama dialect, which means Suzuki, a mall which store rice straws.
When we read the Bible, Abram came to be called Abraham in the encounter with God, and Jacob was renamed Israel. In the meeting with Jesus, Simon changed his name to Peter and Saul changed his name to Paul. Perhaps because of these, Catholics receive a baptismal name when they are baptized. A new name is given in the prayer of learn from a saint’s faith. In Christian countries, not only in Europe but also in Russia, what is celebrated is the day of their saint’s holidays. Also, in the monastery, we do not celebrate holiday of each but celebrate the holidays of the baptismal name given. The patron saint of Kasukabe Church is Saint Timothy. Did you know its holiday? Just as Simon came to be called Peter, the baptismal name is meaningful. And when is his holiday?
Today’s Bible words speaks of Peter’s confession of faith. Peter is from Galilee and is also known as Simon, Kefa and Simeon. Simeon, in its original Hebrew form, is known as the name in the Church of Jerusalem. Simon is the Greek name of Simeon, and in many places the name Simon is used affectionately. The Gospel of John already said at the time of the calling, “You are Simon son of John, but from now on I will call you Kefah.” Kefa is the spoken language of the time in Aramaic and means rock. In Greek, it is Peter. Since people at that time spoke both their native and Greek languages, the old and new names were often used together in John, like Simon Peter.
What is interesting is that in today’s Gospel of Matthew he is not called “son of John” but called “Baryona”, or “the son of Jonah”. John means “the Lord is gracious,” but Jonah means a “dove.” Peter tries to walk on the water when he sees Jesus appearing in the storm, but when the strong wind blows, he panicked, be drowned and asked Jesus for help. Also, when we see Moses and Elijah appear to Jesus, he confessed and said “we will build up three tabernacles here…” Also, on the night when they had the last supper, He got afraid to be caught and he refused three times to confess that he knows Jesus. So, Jesus may have said he was the son of Jonah as he saw Peter always fluttering like a pigeon and flapping. I believe Jesus gave him the name “rock” in the hope that Peter have a firm belief and be strong as rock.
Now let us turn to the particularly important question in today’s Word. “So, what do you say I am?”
After this question, there would have been a moment of silence, looking at each other.
Then, Peter broke and made a great confession. And Jesus, who will go to the cross, now knows that at least one of his disciples knows himself as the Messiah, the anointed of God, the Son of the Living God.
The point to note here is that Jesus’ questions are addressed to you and you are asked “who do you say I am”. When Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the King of the Jews?” he answered, “Did you say that from your thoughts, or did other people tell you about me?”
Even if one knows all the teachings they learned about Jesus to this day and all the views of the great thinker or theologian studying Jesus, it is not enough. Christian faith is not about knowing about Jesus, but about knowing Jesus.
Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?” is asked to each of us. What do you confess to him?
